Greetings! Fall is officially here, the temps are getting cooler, school is back in session, and the busy holiday season approaches. It is a great time of the year.

In this vlog I want to provide an update from the RID Board meeting held Thursday, September 22nd. The board met from 6 – 11 PM and addressed a full agenda.

Volunteer Appointments:

We completed the volunteer appointments for two [2] 2016-2017 RID member-led workgroups—the EPS Review Task Force and the Code of Professional Conduct Review Committee. The board was able to make initial appointments to the Certification Committee as well but has left a couple of seats vacant to ensure there is Deaf representation and perspective included within this committee. Appointments for the Pro-Bono Work Group were not made as the intent from this member motion was that half of those serving would be in favor of the addition of a Pro-Bono CEU and the other half of those serving on this work group would be opposed to the Pro-Bono CEU. We did not capture that information in the original application and will begin reaching out to interested applicants to gain further perspective before moving forward with appointments to this group. We had a total of twenty-two applicants. Once those selected to serve area notified and have confirmed, their names will be published.

We extend our sincere thanks to these individuals for their willingness to serve the membership and profession through their volunteer service. Volunteer leadership is the cornerstone of a member-driven association! You might be interested to know that across all of our affiliate chapters, councils, committees, chairs of member sections, editorial boards, board of directors, mediators, arbitrators, and the CASLI Board of Managers and Test Development Committee we have more than 375 individuals serving in volunteer leadership capacities—approximately 3% of our membership.

RID benefits greatly from the contributions and expertise of these many volunteers.  As well, these volunteers have a sense of giving back to the profession, expressing their values through activities that are meaningful, increasing their knowledge and skills through peer collaboration, gaining insider knowledge of how various aspects of the association, and building relationships with colleagues.  It’s a win-win for us all.

CDI Bridge Plan:

Another item on the recent board meeting agenda is the CDI bridge plan that a CDI workgroup has developed and submitted to the board.  We appreciate the thorough and thoughtful proposal that was submitted and recognize the frustration that may exist from the length of time this proposal has been considered.  The board believes the additional time has been absolutely necessary to understand the implications of the proposal for conferring of a temporary credential to CDI candidates.  There remain a few more areas of the proposal that must be considered more fully and to that end, the board is seeking further counsel from the association parliamentarian and attorney.  It is our hope to have the answers we need to make a final determination on the proposal during the October board meeting.

Transition Team:

The search for an RID Executive Director by TSNE, the association consulting firm we have been working with for the past few years, and the Transition Team, is on track in terms of timelines and the screening of applicants is now in process.  The Transition Team will do an initial round of interviews during October and propose finalists to the board thereafter.  The finalists will be invited to prepare a vlog for membership and stakeholder review and feedback in November. The board plans to do final interviews and hopefully make an offer in December.  Further updates will be reported as the process moves forward.

Regional Rep Elections:

The nomination period for Region I and IV Rep positions is open until September 30, 2016.  We are in our second period of Special Elections.  At the time of this recording, Region IV has one nomination. Region I has none.

The Region V Rep position, vacated by the transition of Erica West Oyedele to the position of Vice President, is open for nomination until October 15th.

Should any of these three vacancies require an election due to contested races, the election period will be from November 1-30, 2016.  It remains our hope that all three vacancies will be filled in the near future.
