Testing Process

Steps to Certification

  • Written Test: The written portion of an exam is given in multiple choice format and tests your knowledge on many subjects pertaining to the specific interpreting area for that certification. Topics tested include ethics, linguistics, and interpreting theory. Formats for written tests include pencil and paper (using a Scantron form) and computer based (via a computer at a proctored test site). Once you have passed the written test, you are considered a candidate for certification and are eligible to take the performance portion of that test.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Beginning June 30, 2009, hearing candidates for certification must have a minimum of an associate’s degree to take a performance exam. Deaf candidates must have a minimum of an associate’s degree after June 30, 2012.
  • Performance Test: The performance portion of an exam will test your skills in signing, voicing and other areas specific to the certification you have chosen to pursue. The performance test involves watching taped stimuli and being filmed while signing and voicing.
  • RID currently offers one conditional permit – the CLIP-R. Holders of this conditional permit have completed an RID recognized training program designed for interpreters and transliterators who work in legal settings and who are also deaf or hard-of-hearing

Registering for a Test

If you have further questions, please contact the certification department

  • Apply and pay for the test, submitting any and all necessary documentation fulfilling specific test requirements. Register online.
  • To receive the RID member rate, you MUST already be a member in good standing. Learn more about membership>>
  • Once payment is processed, a receipt will be e-mailed or mailed to you.
  • Once your application and payment have been received, the following will happen, depending upon the type of test you are taking:
    • Written pencil & paper – RID will send confirmation of your testing site choice.
    • Computer-based – The candidate will need to log on to CASTLE Worldwide, Inc., with the URL provided in the receipt letter; once the candidate submits their preferred sites, dates and times, CASTLE will confirm the selections via e-mail within three to five business days.
    • Performance – Candidates need to schedule this directly with the supersite of their choice. If they are testing at a regional testing center (RTC) that has specific dates, they need to indicate on the application form which site and date they want, and RID will contact them.
  • If you schedule testing slots with multiple supersites and do not cancel the unused appointments following existing guidelines, you will be charged a full testing fee for the unused appointments.
