Purpose:

The purpose of the Interpreting Service Managers Member Section is to serve the members of the RID who share a mutual interest in the business and management of sign language interpreting services. Its members include agency owners, not for profit managers, institutional managers and managers within companies who hire and coordinate interpreting services. Its mission is to provide a forum for the discussion of relevant topics that are of mutual interest to some or all of its members.

ISM Leadership Biographies

Dave Calvert, CI, IIC, Kentucky Interpreting License, Arizona Legal License, SEMIA Certified Medical Interpreter

I was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. I have my degree in American Sign Language from Vincennes University and attended Indiana University/Purdue University in Indianapolis (IUPUI) for Interpreting. I spent 20 years as an educational interpreter and the past 5 years as the Director of Rauch Interpreting Services in New Albany, IN.  I am state licensed in Indiana and Kentucky and I have been nationally certified since 2006. I served 10 years on the Indiana Chapter of RID (ICRID), including two terms as its President. I was co-chair of the 2004 RID Region III Conference in Indianapolis and served as a Committee Chair on several state, regional and national committees. I have been the previous Chair of two RID Member Sections and I am honored to serve a Chair for the IMS.

Daniel B. Swartz, Ph.D. CI, CT, SC:L, ED:K-12

I am a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, completing my service in 1979. I’ve been interpreting since 1985. I obtained my AA in interpreting from Gallaudet, and was one of the first hearing people to obtain a BA from Gallaudet (1990, Theatre and Psychology).  My MA is in Clinical Psychology, and my Doctorate in Business Administration.

I am the CEO of 360 Translations in Collingswood, NJ. I am married to Pat McCracken, together for 28 years. We have a 24 year old son, Hermogenes, as well a three rescue dogs – Hope, Amber, and Jake. I am very excited to be a co-chair and look for to working together to effect positive change is this very critical time in RID’s growth and change.

Melissa Mittelstaedt

I graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with my B.A. in Business Administration: Management then graduated from Saint Paul College in Minnesota, with my degree in Sign Language Interpretation/Transliteration. My interpreting career has included the following environments: education, chemical dependency, medical, corporate, and theatre. As an ISM I have worked with a few different organizations. I am currently working with Garden & Associates, Inc., a full service language agency (ASL, Spoken Language, and Document Transliterations)  as the Director of Sign Language Services. I am married with a cat and a turtle, aka “My Zoo”.
