Sonja W. Smith was raised in southern California, but now calls Austin, Texas home.  While in high school, she played water polo with Deaf teammates, and thus began her training to become an ASL/English interpreter.  After high school, she continued her education at Baylor University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders, with an emphasis on Deaf Education.  She completed her Master of Arts in Interpreting Studies, with an emphasis on interpreter education, in 2016.  She briefly taught high school in the Austin, Texas area before discovering her true passion: ASL/English interpreting.  She has been a freelance ASL/English interpreter for almost 10 years, working in a variety of settings, including national and regional conferences.  Sonja holds the Board of Evaluation for Interpreters (TX) Master and Court certifications and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf National Interpreter Certification.  Sonja is currently an adjunct faculty member at Austin Community College in the ASLIT program.  Prior to joining the RID Board of Directors, Sonja was the Communications chair for the Texas Society of Interpreters for the Deaf.
