RID Board of Directors: DPMAL Vote to Continue

Signed announcement>>
October 16, 2013 – Alexandria, VA – The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID) Board of Directors announce that the Deaf-Parented Member-at-Large (DPMAL) Bylaws Amendment vote, currently open, will remain open and follow the initial voting process found at the RID website.

Points for Evaluation & Consideration
The Board, with deep consideration in following the will of the membership in regard to the timeline set within the DPMAL motion passed at the 2013 National Conference business meeting, met to discuss concerns about the voting webpage language and verification of Affiliate Chapter Membership. Great sensitivity was taken as we discussed the possible impact of confusion that might ensue over restarting the vote. Discussions points included:

Webpage Language
It was brought to our attention that the term ‘survey’ was present on the voting web page. Making quick revision to reflect the term ‘voting’ after two days providing significant voting days with the proper language for the remainder of the 60 day voting period.  After a discussion on the impact of this change, it was considered enough time to preserve the intent and inertia of the member’s desire for the vote.

Verification of Affiliate Chapter Membership
The other concern discussed is the matter of verification of membership within RID and Affiliate Chapters in order to vote on national matters.  RID Bylaws, Article III, Section 3. A. state “In order to be a voting member of the RID, a person must be a member in good standing, belong to a voting category and be a member of an affiliate chapter.” At this time, RID’s database cannot confirm membership of both RID and an Affiliate Chapter. While not ideal, it has been common practice to invite votes through an informal ‘honor system’. Also, while discussing solutions it was clear that the new database, set to launch Spring of 2014, will allow for such verification.

Weighing solution options, impacts of the current voting climate and short-term protocols for impending votes (Board election for example) it was determined that continuing the current vote would be the best option.
