The Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission (IDHHC) is seeking an Illinois-licensed sign language interpreter for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing to fill the position of Interpreter Coordinator. The position oversees the administration of the Interpreters for the Deaf Licensure Act of 2007 including the Board of Evaluation of Interpreters Certification program.  The ideal candidate is professional and self-motivated who wants to improve communication access for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing and DeafBlind community.

Job Responsibilities

  1. Serves as the Interpreter Coordinator for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission. Travels in the performance of duties.
  2. Oversees the administration of the IL BEI Certification testing.
  3. Prepares required applications and reports under the ISBE Discretionary Special Education Grant.
  4. Provides administrative support to the Director.
  5. Serves as a Liaison to the IL Board of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  6. Through sign language, communicates with those who are deaf and hard of hearing and others including constituents, government officials, legislators, staff, and others.
  7. Conducts complaint investigations received under the Licensure Act.
  8. Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of those enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of college, preferably with coursework in business or public administration.
  2. Requires one year of responsible administrative experience in a public or business organization, or completion of an agency-approved professional management training program.
  3. Possess a license under the Illinois Interpreters for the Deaf Licensure Act of 2007 or an accepted certificate under the Act to obtain a license under the Illinois Interpreters for the Deaf Licensure Act of 2007 by the time of hire.
  4. Ability to use and interpret sign language at a colloquial skill level.

Specialized Skills

  1. Working knowledge of deafness, deaf culture, and the Interpreters for the Deaf Licensure Act of 2007.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Possess a Basic or higher Board for Evaluation of Interpreters Certification.
  2. Working knowledge of deafness, deaf culture, and the Interpreters for the Deaf Licensure Act of 2007.
  3. Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  4. Working knowledge of developing and monitoring a budget.
  5. Elementary knowledge of grant administration.

Conditions of Employment

  1. Requires the employee to either obtain an IL BEI certification of Basic or higher within 18 months from date of hire or the employee not possess the physical abilities to qualify for an IL BEI certification.
  2. Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate.
  3. Requires the ability to pass a background check.
  4. Overtime is a condition of employment, and you may be required/mandated to work overtime including scheduled, unscheduled, or last-minute overtime. This requires the ability to work evenings and weekends.
