Licensure Information
Registration requirements: 3.5 or higher as a temporary score, but 4.0 as the permanent minimum score for EIPA
• National Interpreter Certification plus graduation from an Interpreter Training Program.
• New graduates have two (2) years to work with a mentor and implement an education plan. You must have completed an Interpreter Training Program
AND
Hold RID CI/CT, NAD III, IV, or V, NIC, or EIPA with a 4.0 or above and have passed both the written portion and either the secondary or elementary performance exam,
AND
Must be a member of RID and maintain the CEU requirement whether you hold RID, NAD, NIC, or EIPA.
OR
if you are not yet certified but within 2 years of ITP graduation: You must file for a 2 year provisional certificate from the Minnesota Department of Education and while holding this you MUST be mentored weekly by a qualified mentor (as outlined per statute 122A.31) and have an education plan in place.
You can apply for a one time extension to your provisional license.
For courts: Sign Language Interpreters must additionally be certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or National Association for the Deaf (NAD) before being included on the statewide roster with one or more of the following certifications:
Certificate of Interpretation (CI) and Certificate of Transliteration (CT), Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC), National Association of the Deaf Advanced (NAD V), Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) or Certified Deaf Interpreter – provisional (CDI-provisional).

Additional Information
Term Limits: 4 year terms, no more than 3 consecutive terms
At least 50 percent of the members must be deaf or deafblind or hard of hearing.
Members shall include persons who are:
• Deaf.
• DeafBlind.
• Hard of Hearing.
• Parents of children who are deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing.
• Representatives of county and regional human services, including representatives of private service providers. The governor appoints commission members. The commission shall select one (1) member as chair.
