Requirements
** Must be Deaf or hard of hearing, Requirements are the same as the Interpreter/ Transliterator License listed above.
** Must assure all employed and contracted sign language interpreters meet the following criteria:
** Must hold one of the following:
1. A Valid NIC, NIC Advanced or NIC Master Certification; or
2. One of the following RID valid certification: Certificate of Interpretation, Certificate of Transliteration, Interpretation Certificate, Transliteration Certificate, Comprehensive Skills Certificate, or Interpretation Certificate/Transliteration Certificate; or
3. Hold a valid Level III or higher on the Interpreter Proficiency Certificate awarded by the National Association of the Deaf (NAD); or
4. Hold a valid certification Level III, IV or V in Interpreting or Transliterating on the Mid-America Quality Assurance Screening; or
5. Hold another state certification or licensure that is substantially equivalent to one of the above; and
** Must be 18 years or older
and
**Have attained a high school degree or equivalent
** Have completed either of the sets of requirements:
1. Hold a valid Certified Deaf Interpreter Certification RID Certificate;
or
2. Have documentation of the following:
A. Passed a language proficiency examination at a minimum of an advanced level or equivalent; and
B. Passed either the written Mid-America Quality Assurance Screening examination; or the written NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct examination; and
C. Completed 8 hours of training on the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct, and 8 hours of training related to the role and function of a deaf or hard of hearing intermediary interpreter. These trainings must fall under the specific catagories listed under TItle 96 found at https://ncdhh.nebraska.gov/sites/ncdhh.nebraska.gov/files/doc/2015_Title%20_96_R%26R_12.28.15.pdf

Length
Two (2) year cycles (expires on June 30 of each even year). Effective January 1, 2016, N.R.S. §20-156.01 mandates that sign language interpreters who receive compensation for their services and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) Service Providers who provide services in Nebraska to hold licensure in the State of Nebraska. Interpreters that are exempt from this law are: interpreters working in the K-12 educational setting, volunteers, emergency situations (interpreters working in an emergency situation is only permitted until a licensed interpreter arrives), interpreting students (must be under the supervision of a licensed interpreter), interpreters working in the religious setting, and interpreters working under a VRI business license (working for a VRI provider, who is licensed)
Cost of License
Two Year Licensure Cycle – $50, 30 days in a Calendar year: $25.00, Two year licensure cycle: $150

Board/Agency
The Board consists of eight (8) people:
– One Director of Health and Human Services per his/her designee;
– One Director of NCDHH or his/her designee;
– Two Deaf or Hard of Hearing people;
– Two qualified interpreters (who must be licensed interpreters with one-year appointment;
Two members representing local government.
Term limits: Three (3) years terms with a two (2) term limit”
