RID Celebrates International Week of the Deaf

Signed announcement>>

September 23, 2013 – Alexandria, VA  – The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID), is excited to join in the global celebration of International Week of the Deaf, September 23-27, 2013 with a focus, this year, on “Equality for Deaf People.”

“The International Week of the Deaf theme is timely in that RID launched a new vision for our association which encompasses the spirit of equality,” shared Shane H. Feldman, RID Executive Director.

The RID Vision was recently adopted by the RID Board of Directors in July 2013 and states the following:

Vision: Our Desired Future:

By honoring its past and building a dynamic future, RID envisions a world where:

  • Linguistic rights are recognized as human rights;
  • The Deaf Community and the Deaf-Heart are vital and visible in every aspect of RID, the interpreting profession as a whole and among individual interpreters;
  • Interpreted interactions between and among individuals who use signed and spoken languages are as rich as direct communication;
  • The interpreting profession is formally recognized and is advanced by robust professional development, standards of conduct, and credentials.

Feldman continued, “To me personally, achieving equality means there are no barriers to information and there are not boundaries to opportunity. Let’s work together to make this week of celebration a special one and agree to work together in pursuit of the goal of ‘Equality for Deaf People.’”

In addition to celebrating International Week of the Deaf, RID has joined the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) in supporting international advocacy efforts such as the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) to obtain the recognition of sign language and deaf culture in society.  More information about CRPD is available on the NAD website at www.nad.org.
