After this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Explain key concepts of emotional intelligence and co-creating at the remembering level.

  • Analyze the role of self-awareness in the interpreting process at the understanding level.

  • Apply strategies to manage reactions with agility at the applying level.

  • Evaluate techniques for reading interpersonal cues at the evaluating level.

Presenter: Sarah Wheeler, M.Ed., M.S.

Sarah Wheeler is a highly accomplished freelance ASL/English interpreter, esteemed educator, author, and dedicated researcher with a remarkable track record of over 16 years in the industry. Recognized for her expertise, Sarah has been invited to present on ASL/English interpreting topics at national and international conferences. With a distinguished background serving in the Air Force, Sarah holds a B.A. in Business Management, a Certificate in Nonprofit Management, an M.Ed in Interpreter Pedagogy, and a Master’s in General Psychology. Her academic pursuits have given her a comprehensive understanding of the intricacies of effective communication and emotional intelligence in interpreting. Passionate about fostering genuine collaboration between Deaf and hearing communities, Sarah’s work promotes culturally responsive teaching practices for interpreters. She remains committed to advancing the field through her research, which focuses on enhancing communication and strengthening connections between diverse communities.
