Licensure Information
– Three (3) professional references.
– High School Diploma or Equivalent
– Must hold RID, EIPA 3.5, and pass State Test
– Resume
– RID Membership
– Copies of all certifications held and transcripts from ITP if applicable.
– Additional comment: requirements for interpreters begin on p. 61 documentation. Certificate requires 36 semester hours of post-secondary education. There are two different provisional credentials.
In addition, Provisional Certifications are available:
– Two types:
A. Restricted: 36 semester hours, Sign Support Specialist PD plan, proof of having taken required assessment(s), at least once (and annually for renewal);
B. Initial: 36 semester hours or hours plus EIPA: WT, and performance exam EIPA 3.0+, NAD III+, RID, NIC, or QAS II+.
– For provisional credential holders, they must renew every three (3) years. This requires 15 hours of WVDE-approved PD, satisfaction of WVRID requirements, eand employing county superintendent recommendation.
Additional Information
A person not licensed shall not falsely identify themselves as a licensed interpreter, practice as an interpreter, or use another person’s license. Violation is a Class 2 misdemeanor (up to four months in jail / up to $750 fine for individual persons or up to a $10,000 fine for enterprises).

Term Limits: Three-year terms with no more than two (2) consecutive terms.
